- Network topology
- The layout of computer systems on a network.
- Star topology
- A network topology that involves all nodes (devices) connected to a central switch.
- How does a star topology work?
- 1. Data is sent to the switch in the centre of the network. 2. The switch forwards that data directly to each node using their unique MAC addresses.
- What central hardware could a star topology also use?
- A hub.
- Advantages of star topology
- - If a device fails or a cable disconnects, the rest of the network is unaffected. - The switch can monitor and control transmissions on the network.
- Advantage - How can you add new nodes to a star topology network?
- Very scalable - it's easy to add new nodes to the network via the switch.
- Advantage - Why are data transfer speeds fast in a star topology?
- Because there are very few data collisions.
- Disdvantages of star topology
- - In wired networks, wiring can be expensive. - Extra expensive hardware (the switch) is required to be purchased. - If there is a problem with the switch or hub, the whole network is affected.
