Layer
A group of protocols with similar functions.
Why do some protocols use layers? (e.g. TCP/IP)
Because each layer has a specific function, each layer can be updated or fixed without affecting the whole protocol.
Advantage - What does it mean for a layer to be 'self-contained'?
A developer can edit a layer without affecting the other.
Advantage - What do layers do for a developer?
They simplify the design of the protocol.
What does layering ensure?
Since each layer uses protocols, layering ensures that each protocol is applied in the correct order.
