- How do wired networks transfer data?
- Across a physical connection using transmission media (e.g. ethernet cables).
- What hardware is required within each device for this to occur?
- A Network Interface Card
- Ethernet cables
- Transmission media used on LANs to transfer data at high speeds over a short distance. These speeds can go up to 10 Gbps.
- When would ethernet cables be used?
- When connecting computers to a switch or router.
- Advantage of wired networks
- There is faster data transfer rate between networks, especially on LANs using ethernet cables.
- Advantage - What is the result of a lower latency?
- There is less delay when transferring data.
- Advantage - Why are wired networks more reliable?
- There is less interference and a more stable connection.
- Advantage - Why is the security on wired networks better?
- Because for data to be intercepted, physical access is required, unlike in wireless networks.
- Disadvantage - Why do wired networks restrict movement?
- As devices are physically limited by cables.
- Disadvantage - Why can wired networks be dangerous in busy environments?
- It creates trip hazards.
- Disadvantage (setting up)
- Setting up wired connections can be difficult, time-consuming and requires constant maintenance
- Disadvantage (setting up costs)
- Buying additional hardware such as a switch or hub, plus the cables, can be expensive.
