9 flashcards
- Bandwidth
- The amount of data that can be transferred per second (Mbps).
- How does a higher bandwidth affect network performance?
- More bandwidth means more data can be sent at once.
- How does congestion affect network performance?
- Available bandwidth is shared between devices on a network, so too many devices / heavy use slows the network down.
- Latency
- The delay in the transmission of data, often caused by distance or network congestion (ms).
- How does latency affect network performance?
- A lower latency means faster responses.
- What causes wireless networks to suffer interference?
- - Other electronic devices - Physical objects (e.g. walls)
- What interference can wired network cables suffer from?
- Electromagnetic interference.
- Data collisions
- When packets of data are sent at the exact same time, they collide and need to be resent.
- How do data collisions affect network performance?
- The more data collisions on a network, the slower it will perform, as data need to be resent.
